Proactively Grateful
Now that my classes are over I’ve been happy to pick up books that I’ve been wanting to read for a long time. I’ve been loving Stephen R. Covey’s, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. I still have not even gotten close to the end of the book and I can already say that it is simply mind blowing.
The first habit Covey dives into is being proactive, as opposed to being reactive. I, as a highly sensitive person, lean more on being reactive in various areas of my life. However, I want to change this. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life being reactive. Instead of just letting things happen to me, I want to create the best version of myself possible, regardless of whatever external conditions present. One of the characteristics of proactive people is that they focus their energy on things they can change. For me, this means changing the way that I look at things.
And changing the way I look at things means focusing on gratitude. So in hopes of being more proactive, I thought I’d write a list of things I’m grateful for.
I’m grateful for completing my undergrad, despite finishing in the midst of a pandemic.
I’m grateful for my job, despite the uncertainties of COVID-19.
I’m grateful for my friends and family, for endlessly supporting me.
I’m grateful for my gifts and talents that I have yet to cultivate.
I’m grateful for my past, my weaknesses, and struggles.
I’m grateful for my health.
I’m grateful for this season of life, now that I’m done with school I can spend more time in my interests and passions.
I’m grateful for my students I have yet to meet!
Everyday I am going to write a list of things I’m grateful for, and I encourage you as well. This is one way I am going to be proactive. I may not have control over everything in my life, but I can change the way I see what’s in front of me.
I wholeheartedly recommend The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. I hope this small Sunday post encourages you to be proactive in any area of your life.
Have a beautiful, gratitude-filled week!
